Entry Requirements for Graduate Programs at Stony Brook University

An applicant needs to have at least a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale. If a student’s college only gives Pass or Credit grades in the first year, these will be treated as a C when calculating the GPA for admission, unless the student can provide actual grades.

English Language Requirements for Applying to a Graduate Program at Stony Brook University

• Financial Hardship: U.S. citizens who can prove that paying the application fee would be a financial burden can request a waiver. You’ll need to provide a letter from a financial aid officer and full financial details for the current academic year, including costs and financial aid received.

• Fellowship/Scholarship Students: If you’re currently receiving a fellowship or scholarship through programs like EOP, HEOP, SEEK, McNair, and others, you can request a fee waiver. To qualify, include a letter or email from the program with your application.

• Veterans and Active Military: Veterans, active-duty military, and members of the National Guard or Reserves do not have to pay the application fee. Before the waiver is granted, veterans need to be verified by the Office of Veteran Affairs and must submit a copy of their discharge papers (DD Form 214) with their application.
